Skin
'SKIN (In its own right)' presents a new perspective on the skin. Several essays deepen and underpin the three chapters. Skin as an organ, skin as a boundary between inside and outside, and skin as a surface for projection.
As a curator, I synthesize all the building blocks while providing the reader with insight into how the elements came together.
Uncharted territory: Skin in its own right.
An organ that can do much more than feel. It is a boundary that separates us as much as it connects us. It’s a surface, our interface and contact zone. It is a (third) space for projections and inscriptions. A visual marker of our identity, by which you can recognize, exclude, or stigmatize people. This research document was created with this vision to look at skin in this new light.
To give insight into the connections I made, I made my analysis of the essay visual in a mapping. It became my research method to find the narrative structure for my publication. The three chapters emerged from this: skin as an organ, a boundary between inside/outside, and a surface for projection.
You can open the book wherever you want. You don't have to read all the essays to understand it. By connecting photos, highlights, and the mapping, you can gain a clear understanding of the new perspective on skin.
